| Q & A
1. Can I get insurance for my E-Bike if I
wanted to?
When checking with my Insurance company, they informed me I was
already covered by my homeowners insurance. I was covered for theft
and liability. So even if I hit a car or someone, I was covered by
my home insurance. But check with your own provider.
2.What if I weigh more than the max weight
specified?
For most part, going over a bit is no big deal, but if your are over
by a fair amount, you should stay away from large hills or
overpasses, as your motor may be overworked and burn out. On even
ground, there isn't a problem.
3. Can I ride my bike on the sidewalk?
No, it is against the law for even a regular bike to be on the
sidewalk.
4. Do we have a payment plan?
Not for spring and summer, but we are doing a fall/winter payment
system for getting your bike in the spring.
5. Can I modify my bike to go faster?
We do not recommend this, as it WILL void your warranty. It also
makes your bike illegal.
6. Where are our bikes made?
All are bikes are imported from China, as are most other suppliers.
7. Can I ride my ebike in the rain?
If you get caught in the rain is one thing, but try to avoid riding
it, if it is calling for rain that day.
8. Where can a e-bike travel?
Power-assisted bicycles can travel anywhere a bicycle
travels. They are permitted on trails and paths where municipal
by-laws permit bicycles Power-assisted bicycles, like bicycles
are not allowed on controlled-access highways such as 400 series
highways, the Queen Elizabeth Way, the Queensway in Ottawa or
the Kitchener-Waterloo Expressway, or on certain municipal
roads, or sidewalks where bicycles are banned under municipal
by-laws.
9. Do I need to wear a helmet?
Yes, all riders must wear a approved bike helmet, or you can wear a
better motorcycle helmet.
10. Will they change the laws regarding
e-bikes?
We won't really know till at least Oct 2009, but even if they do? It
should be cheap, and still NO GAS.
11. Can I have a passenger?
No/Yes, current bike regulations states you can not "double ride".
But bikes make for 2 are legal for 2, so if your E-Bike seats 2 than
it's OK Caution on this
matter. It is a gray area.
12. How do I store my bike for winter?
We recommend a garage or indoors somewhere. If you keep it in a cold
place for winter, remove the battery, and bring it indoors. Then
plug charger directly into it every month to top it up. If you keep
bike stored in heated area with battery still installed, turn on the
headlights for a hour or so, once a month, then charge it back up.
13. Where do I put my feet when riding?
Always keep your feet on the pedals, even if not pedaling. This
gives you better balance, and protects your battery. Also, it keeps
your pedals from aiming down and making contact with the ground on
sharp turns. If you are not doing any turns, than it is safe to
place your feet on the front section.
14. Where do I park my bike when I go to
the mall or stores?
If there is a provided bike rack, park there. If not, park it
anywhere in front of the store where you would park a bicycle. An
e-bike is not a legal bike to park in a regular parking spot. But if
not provided spots are available by the store for bicycles, than
there is no choice to do so.
15. Is there anyone that cleans or details
E-Bikes?
YES, someone right here at our store does this for a fee. See
the 3 Step Program.
16. Can I take my pedals off?
Only for transporting your bike, or when storing it. Riding with no
pedals violates many traffic laws totaling
$6000 in fines. Also will void warranty.
17. How does the charger work?
Plug into bike first, then the wall. You will see 2 red lights.
Later 1 will flash red, then flash green, then a solid green light.
Your charge is done. This can take from 2 - 9 hours.
18. Is a power-assisted bicycle the same as
an e-bike?
Yes. An e-bike is considered a power-assisted bicycle as long
as it meets all the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
19. Why is the province piloting e-bikes
and not simply legislating e-bikes for public roadways?
The piloting of e-bikes on Ontario roads is a first step to
fully legalizing the use of these vehicles on public roadways. A
pilot allows the ministry to test the use of these vehicles under
certain licensing and operational conditions before making final
decisions on how these vehicles should be legislated for on-road
use.
20. If a police officer stopped someone who
is drunk while driving an e-bike, how would they be charged? Would
this be a Criminal Code offence? HTA offence?
Drinking and driving a motor vehicle is a Criminal Code offence and
charges are laid under the Criminal Code of Canada. Under the
Criminal Code, the definition of a "motor vehicle" includes an
e-bike and anyone operating an e-bike while intoxicated could be
charged with impaired driving. If convicted, the offender would be
subject to the Criminal Code penalties, including a fine or jail
time; and a driving prohibition. However, under this pilot
regulation, an e-bike would not be a motor vehicle under the Highway
Traffic Act, so penalties for impaired driving under the Act would
not apply.
21. Is there any fines that a E-Biker can
get?
Yes. same as a person on a regular bike.
